How to Make Chapstick at Home - Orange, Spearmint, or Peppermint

If you’re addicted to ChapStick, you aren’t alone. Lots of people rely on lip balms like ChapStick to avoid dry, chapped lips. But constantly buying ChapStick can really add up, which is why we’re sharing some easy copycat ChapStick recipes that you can make at home!

Copycat ChapStick Basics

All our recipes include a few basic ingredients:

Beeswax Pellets

Beeswax pellets are an easy way to make sure your lip balm solidifies – otherwise it’d be a runny mess. You can find cosmetic-grade beeswax pellets online or in several health food stores.

Coconut Oil

Coconut oil can be found in almost any grocery store and is excellent for providing much-needed moisture to your lips.

Shea Butter

Shea butter is another natural ingredient that is jam-packed with hydrating properties and can be found online or in most big-name retailers.

Essential Oils

Essential oils are used in very small amounts to add fragrance and some extra health benefits to your lip balm mixture. You can find them online or at a health food store but make sure they’re high-quality essential oils before adding them to your lip balm.

Just a few simple ingredients can yield much more lip balm for cheaper than what you’d pay for ChapStick from a store. And better yet, by making it yourself, you’ll know exactly what’s going into it so you can avoid the added synthetics found in name brand ChapStick.

How long will homemade Chapstick last?

Homemade lip balms don’t have any added preservatives like the name-brand stuff, so it will go bad more quickly. You should try to use it within three months, but if you’re storing it properly by keeping it out of direct sunlight or high temperatures, it could last for up to six months.
