How to Make Lip Balm at Home Without Beeswax

Lip balm is one of those go-to, versatile cosmetics that pretty much no one can go without. It can help soothe dry lips, moisturize chapped skin, and even treat cold sores, so it’s no wonder why it’s so universally loved.

It’s also incredibly easy to make and super customizable! There are a ton of ingredients you can use to make a great DIY lip balm, even without beeswax. Beeswax is great for DIY lip balms since it’s an all-natural product that can help keep your lips hydrated, but some people are sensitive to it or don’t want to use it because they’re vegan.

If that describes you, we’re here to share some soothing lip balm recipes without beeswax to make at home.

Beeswax Substitutes

Beeswax normally works to solidify a lip balm, so if you’re leaving it out, you need to replace it without another solidifying ingredient. Here are some of the most commonly used beeswax substitutes:

  • Soy wax
  • Carnauba wax
  • Candelilla wax
  • Olive-based wax

DIY Lip Balm Recipes Without Beeswax

Making lip balm at home just requires a few ingredients. You need a solid butter like shea or coconut butter, a wax like candelilla or soy wax, a carrier oil like jojoba or almond oil, and a few drops of essential oil for fragrance.

And that’s it! That’s everything you need to make a simple, hydrating lip balm that works well and smells great. Here are three of our favorite recipes to make your next favorite DIY lip balm:

Shea Butter Lip Balm

Shea butter is one of the best kinds of butter for lip balms since it can be used on its own to moisturize. However, some people don’t like the smell of it, so whipping up a DIY lip balm with some essential oils is the way to go.

This recipe also uses calendula oil for its healing properties, but you can replace it with any other type of carrier oil you’d like. You can also replace the lavender essential oil with an essential oil of your choosing, but keep in mind that different potencies might need fewer or more drops to be effective.

Ingredients:

  • 2 tbsp shea butter
  • 1 tbsp soy wax
  • ½ tbsp calendula oil
  • 5 drops of lavender essential oil

Steps:

  1. Melt the shea butter and soy wax in a double boiler over low heat until combined
  2. Add the calendula oil and stir
  3. Remove from heat and add the essential oil
  4. Carefully pour into lip balm tubes or any other type of container you want to use
  5. Allow the mixture to cool and solidify for about 30 minutes

Candelilla Wax Lip Balm

This recipe uses a few extra ingredients to produce a seriously rich, super hydrating lip balm. The natural candelilla wax, shea butter, and cocoa butter are great for making a lip balm that doesn’t feel too waxy or hard, and the almond and jojoba oils make it incredibly moisturizing for silky smooth lips.

Ingredients:

  • 1 tbsp shea butter
  • 1 tbsp cocoa butter
  • 1 tbsp candelilla wax
  • ¼ tbsp jojoba oil
  • ¼ tbsp almond oil
  • 5 drops of peppermint oil

Steps:

  1. Melt the shea butter, cocoa butter, and candelilla wax in a double boiler over low heat until combined
  2. Add the jojoba oil and almond oil and stir
  3. Remove from heat and add the essential oil
  4. Carefully pour into lip balm tubes or any other type of container you want to use
  5. Allow the mixture to cool and solidify for about 30 minutes

Chocolate Lip Balm

This recipe feels and smells super decadent, so it’s perfect for treating yourself or even gifting to a friend or loved one. Cocoa powder is an easy, quick way to add some chocolate flavor and fragrance to your DIY lip balm, so it’s great to keep on hand whenever you want an extra rich, nourishing lip balm.

Ingredients:

  • 1 tbsp coconut butter
  • 2 tbsp olive-based wax
  • ½ tbsp jojoba oil
  • 3 drops of tea tree essential oil
  • 1 tsp of cocoa powder

Steps:

  1. Melt the coconut butter and olive-based wax in a double boiler over low heat until combined
  2. Add the jojoba oil and cocoa powder and stir
  3. Remove from heat and add the essential oil
  4. Carefully pour into lip balm tubes or any other type of container you want to use
  5. Allow the mixture to cool and solidify for about 30 minutes
